Mexican citizen with US Green Card. Do I need a passport to drive to Mexico and back?

Hello,

I'm a Mexican citizen and recently obtained my green card. I'm wanting to visit family in Mexico, but was not sure if I needed a Mexican passport to go to Mexico and get back to the US. I will only be gone for a day and will be driving.

Also, has anyone had any issues getting back to the US with just their US green card? I would appreciate any tips or suggestions as to what to take and what to know to protect myself and get back to the US.
