Single entry J1/2 visas and reentry

This might be a stupid question but I can't find the answer anywhere.

We are currently in the USA on single entry J1/J2 visas issued via the national interest exemption.

We want to travel back to our home country for a family event.

Is it correct that we would need to travel back to our home country, and only then could we apply for a whole new visa before we would be able to reenter the USA?

Can the J1 holder leave the country for the event and leave the J2s in the USA? Would each person need a new visa in this situation?

I can't get my head around this process. Thank you in advance for any advice.

NVC Case FE Review note

Has anyone else received this message? All of our documents say "Approved" on NVC. Does this mean we have to find another sponsor? Can we show the consular officer our
