Do you have to file for a Green Card again when your green card expired for a long time?

Hi everyone. My dad current resides in China and cannot get around very well due to a condition in his leg. I hold the citizenship status here in the US, and my dad once held a green card. However the green card has been expired for about 5 years now. Due to his health condition deteriorating, I want to bring him back here to the US and live with me.

Does anyone know any process to renew a green card and does not require much travel? Getting to the US embassy in China would be hard for him due to his immobility. I heard there might be a way to get sick relatives over to the US faster? If anyone can direct me to the proper forms or any immigration advise in my Green Card situation would be much appreciated.
