Moving from Ontario to the NYS for 1 year on a J1 visa- Do I need to import my vehicle?

Hello, I'm moving from Ontario to New York State on a J1 visa for 1 year (the visa gets renewed every year for 3-years total). Do I have to register and import my vehicle?
