Can a US Citizen child cross the border with a Foreign Passport and a valid US Birth certificate?

Both parents have french passports and green cards.

Our son was born in Florida and has a Birth Certificate and SSN.

We booked vacations a while back and didn't realize we'd need an american passport for our son (1 year old) to get back in. At this point he only has his french passport.

We can leave the US using our french passports but I'm wondering if they will let us back in without his US passport? If we get denied what happens?
