Is automatic EAD extension *really* automatic?

My wife has an EAD under category a17 as the spouse of a principle E visa holder. Her EAD expires on december 25th (merry christmas!)

She applied for renewal avout 5 months ago but case status is still "received."

A17 is on the list of categories elligible for automatic extension of EAD.

How automatic is "automatic?" Do we need to do something to trigger this extension? Does her employer need to do anything? Will her employer receive anything to let them know she's not expired?

Has anyone else received this message? All of our documents say "Approved" on NVC. Does this mean we have to find another sponsor? Can we show the consular officer our
