I was born in New Zealand but moved to America at the age of 11 months old with my Dad. Spent my whole life in the U.S. and graduated high school there. When I turned 18, my Dad demanded I move with him to New Zealand. I had no way of supporting myself so I had no choice. I’d had a Social Security Card but my Dad lost it, jobs were willing to take me on but they couldn’t hire me without seeing that SS card.
My Dad got naturalized as a Citizen around my 18th bday, can’t remember if it was right before or right after. Turned out that he’d never even updated my visa to a green card as a kid, so I was basically non-status this whole time. But the immigration office told us this was still fine and to fill out form I-130 “petition for alien relative”.
Shortly after sending that form off we got a letter back asking either for my green card number, (which I never had!) or some other document/stamp given to me when I first came into the country, which by then was longgg-gone. I had to abandon it because I obviously couldn’t afford an immigration lawyer then.
A lot’s happened since then, I’m 22 now, living in Australia, and cut ties with my Dad. There’s a US embassy in my city but reviews online say they make it clear they don’t wanna answer people’s immigration questions. Surely the fact I graduated school there, had a SSN, and my Dad’s now a citizen means it won’t be too much of a hassle to go back home to the U.S.? What’s my next step??
