Hi, I am currently employed by my company on OPT. I got selected in the H1B lottery and they applied for my Change of Status. I got the H1B Receipt Notice in June which confirmed that my H1B Change of Status application was accepted for processing. As I understand, if accepted my status will change to H1B in October.
Here is the problem. My company has been laying off people recently and I faer I might be lid off before October. If I do get laid off, what would that mean for my legal status? Does that mean I'm still on OPT and can apply for STEM OPT extension to work for another company (I'm eligible for it) or do I have to find an employer that would be willing to sponsor me for H1B? Also, if I want to work for another company before October and go back to OPT, is that still possible? My current employer is based in Missouri if that matters.
This is my first job since graduation and the thought of being laid off is making me more and more anxious each passing day. I really appreciate any information you can give me because I have not been able to find enough information googling online. Thanks!
