Can I enter as a tourist while J-1 is processing?

I have a long wait ahead (many months), I've been told, about a J-1 visa, and I also don't plan to start my job for a few months. In between, I'd like to stay in the US as a tourist (with my citizenship I've told this is possible up to 6 months. While/before my J-1 is granted, is it possible to travel in the US as a tourist?
