For Canadian Citizens, do you need to have a US Visa before applying for Green Card?

A friend of mine is a Canadian citizen, and her employer can sponsor her to get Green Card if she is interested. However, she doesn't have a US visa. Does she need to get a US Visa first before her employer can sponsor her for Green Card?
