Employer is asking for SSN, I am not yet in the US

I started work today with a TN visa for a US company, as part of the initial paperwork I am required to fill the I-9 form which asks for a SSN and a US address however I haven't been able to go to the US due to the COVID situation and I was planning on moving there by the end of August, to which my employer agreed was okay.

However now the payroll team is asking that I either have a SSN or at least I have applied for one for them to be able to pay me. But checking the requirements to apply for a SSN it seems like it can only be done in person. Is there any way to obtain or apply for the SSN online? Please do let me know! Thanks!

The consular officer will make a decision regarding this requirement at the time of the interview. For more information, please visit https://www.uscis.gov/i-864p . To avoid delays, an additional Affidavit of Support Form I-864 for a joint sponsor may be submitted." We already have a petitioner and a household sponsor (the household sponsor's income is above the required level), but still unsure why we received this. Has anyone else received this message? All of our documents say "Approved" on NVC. Does this mean we have to find another sponsor? Can we show the consular officer our ...
