Can I still get a green card on a passport that’s about to expire, less than 6 months

Hi I’m an f1 student .i found a hospital that’s willing to sponsor my green card. The problem is that my passport expires in 6 months.I can’t renew my passport right now because I don’t have an ID and it’s a requirement for passport renewal .our embassy here does not issue ID card. The only way to get it is by going to my country of which If I go I might not get a visa to return.so my question is can I get my green card on a passport that’s about to expire?
