Hi There,
I (26M) completed my undergrad 5 years ago and have been working for my current employer for just over a year. I am a Canadian on a TN visa. I was planning on starting a graduate degree in computer science in a couple months, but my employer just offered to initiate the green card process.
How badly am I shooting myself in the foot if I do not pursue the green card and continue with my graduate program as planned? I do not really enjoy the work I do, and starting the PERM process means I would have to stick with my current employer/team for at least two years minimum. I got into a really good program that I was excited to start. I was actually supposed to start last year, but deferred due to COVID, and accepted this job thinking that I would be there for only a year and a few months. It is a research-based masters and it is more or less required for the type of work I want to be doing (I have spoken with several hiring managers about this).
I know it makes life a lot easier having a green card - more job opportunities, not having your immigration status tied to a specific employer, etc. Is it worth delaying my graduate degree plans for two years minimum to get? I can also not defer that long and would have to reapply - and might not get into the same program.
If I were not Canadian and could not get another TN visa I think it would be a no brainer to stick with my employer and pursue the green card. But I am playing with the hand I was dealt.
Any advice is appreciated.
