F-1 to J-1 Visa

Hello, I am due to start a 1 year study abroad course in LSU next August for which I will have an F-1 visa from what I’ve seen, I am curious if it’s possible to work the prior summer on a J-1 visa and then change visa once going to college. I have read that you made need an attorney to do something like this and that it can be complicated, has anyone done anything like this or have any information? I will have work set up for the J-1 and I will have proof of enrollment and finances etc.. I also read about a “2 year rule” and that waivers can apply? Any information or help is much appreciated! 😅😅
