Do we need to refile an I-539 after 6 months if we haven't heard back from the first?

Back in May, my girlfriend filed an I-539 extension and a Change of Status to an F1 visa. We received receipt for both, but we have not received a decision from USCIS for either. Since it will be over 6 months, do we need to submit a second I-539 extension?
