E2 Visa work legality

One of my friends at university here is under his Dad's E2 Visa. Lately, he's been very committed to finding a job due to no longer wanting to be dependent on his parents sending him money.

As respectable and understandable as that is, I want to make sure that he's aware of the legal risks involved as I don't want him risking his education here for a minimum wage job. What are the possible outcomes/risk attached and what's the process of working legally with an E2 Visa?
