Is there any way to pause 'continuous residence' for the UK ILR?

Hi, I've been living in the UK for 2 years now and am think about graduate school in the US. However, if I go to graduate school in the US, will I lose my current years in the UK (as my residence will no longer be continuous). Is there any way to keep it as I plan to return to the UK after?
