Withdrawal of AOS/EAD application

I am currently waiting to be scheduled for an interview on a AOS marriage-based application. Ending a relationship hard, and it's hard specially after moving countries and being in immigration limbo for so long. I've decided that I am leaving the relationship and also the country.

Before going to a lawyer for more advice, I wanted to run this through reddit first. Could anyone guide me as to what the easiest way to do this would be, without leaving any loose ends?

1) Annulment vs Divorce? (marriage took place in California)
2) How to let USCIS know that I'm not pursuing AOS anymore? Sending them a letter or telling them in person once the interview takes place?

If anyone could give me some advice here, I'd appreciate it! Hope everyone is staying safe.
