I am on H1B cap exempt and a new employer is filing for change of status to H1B non-exempt. I passed the lottery last month. My current h1b is valid for another 2 years.
I have a very strong reason (personal/ medical) reason to not change job till end of the year. I wish to start new job in January. I have couple of questions:-

With change of status, can I continue to work for my present employer from Oct to December? Or I really have to jump to new employer in Oct?

In case I don't join my new employer, can I look for a different employer under non-exempt? This is when my new employer is not willing to wait or something like that.
