boyfriend got a green card when he was 14 lived in the US for 1 year and then was sent back to the Philippines by an evil stepmother…
This is sort of a long confusing story but I hope someone will be able to help us. My boyfriend is from the Philippines. When he was 14 (in 2011) he moved to America to be with his father and step-family.
After a year and one month his stepmother didn’t want him living with them and sent him back to the Philippines.
Six years later, November 2018, he came back to America for good. His dad and aunt came to pick him up in the Philippines and his green card hadn’t expired so he was able to fly back to America. For some reason no one questioned about why he was gone for 6 years. So he was able to come into the country with no problem.
Now here is my actual question. If we try to start some kind of process for him to become a citizen, would they deport him since his green card is expired and technically he “forfeited” his green card since he left the US for more than 6 months (was forced to leave š)? What would be the process for him to become a citizen?
His grandmother is sick (not covid) and we wanted to visit her in the Philippines but we don’t think that would even be possible since he has no visa or green card anymore.
Extra info: His GC expired May 2020. He has a SS card. We do intend to get married eventually, but if we were to do it sooner would that help him?
