Our live-in nanny has been living with us for about a year now and she is honestly fantastic. She was recommended to us by friends who moved away from the area. She didn't know much English and made it clear that she only wanted room and board through google translation on her phone. We didn't have much money at the time so we took her in. We made a point to provide her with a tutor for learning English and she is practically fluent now. Through practicing her new language, we got to talking with her more about her family and where she's from. She revealed to us that she is originally from Venezuela and came to the US to escape abusive family in Maracaibo. She got a password and saved up to buy a round-trip ticket to the US and just never got on the plane to go back home after her stay was official supposed to end. This was 3 years ago, from what we can tell.
1 - What am I supposed to do with this information, legally?
2 - Am I commit a crime by "employing" this person?
3 - Money was never exchanged for services. I gave her one of my credit cards with a $1,000 limit to use as she pleases and she only ever purchases basic living supplies for herself and then I just refuel the card.
4 - Is what she did illegal? How much trouble is she in if ICE learns about this?
5 - Is there a way for me to help her gain a legitimate foothold to stay in the US? She is practically part of the family at this point so if there is a way to help her, we want to explore those options.
THANK YOU!
