My uncle was visiting China and was scheduled to come back to the US in mid-March. However, due to COVID-19, his flights were cancelled multiple times and we've had trouble finding flights back. He is on a green card and, at the end of June, will reach his 180 days overseas.
The flights we've looked at all go through countries with their own set of entry restrictions (ex: Taiwan / Turkey do not allow entry for foreign nationals coming from China). We tried calling the US Embassy in Shanghai but have not received any response from them. With the news that the US is banning flights coming in from China, we are worried if he can still come back. He has proof of employment in the US, his wife is still living in the US (Michigan), and he has lived in the US for the last 15 years.
Questions:
- What can my uncle do to get back to the US / prevent losing his permanent residency status?
- Is there an organization we can contact to get help?
- Is there a form he should file to prevent his loss of permanent residency?
Thank you very much!
