I won’t pretend to be well versed in immigration policy, but I am aware that the conditions in certain US detention centers along the US-Mexican boarder are awful. This made me wonder if people trying to enter the US illegally are entitled to the same protections afforded to POWs under the third convention and/or if the fourth convention would be applicable. I am aware that the US is not at war with Mexico, but aren’t we in a way at war with the cartels, who are at war with the US and Mexico? Aren’t there families who could claim that they are civilians who have been displaced by rising tensions between the warring entities? On another note, what about Syrian refugees, the US literally intervened in the Syrian civil war and therefore has some responsibility to the refugees that come to the US, right?
I hope that my question/s make sense. This is going to bother me until I know the answer.
