What counts as an Emergency Appointment?

Earlier in the year (when the world was fairly normal) I received a post-doctoral position offer from the US, requiring a J1 visa. Then Covid kicked off and all the Consulates shut, including the one in London where I would need to go.

My original start date was many months ago, and although the University have been good at moving it back for me, my job in the UK came to an end, so right now I’m unemployed.

London is currently only accepting emergency appointments, and as a bit of a hail-Mary, I wondered if I would be eligible for one?

I had heard rumours that students/scholars might be eligible for expedited appointments to allow them to attend University in time for the Fall Semester, and wondered if this might apply?

Does anyone have any thoughts/experience with this?
