TN Visa Entry From Another Country

Hi, I have a job that starts next month in the US. The company's lawyer is preparing the TN petition for me, and I am trying to expedite the process but I am getting conflicting information online regarding the process details.

- In order to obtain the TN visa, do I have to enter the US from Canada? I am currently outside of Canada, and I am planning to fly to US directly.

- Do I need the petition to obtain TN visa? Can I just prepare the work documents and qualifications proof myself and not wait for the petition?
