Affidavit of Support (Form I-864) - Would I be liable if the family member I am sponsoring commits a crime or is sued?
I am filling out a Form I-864 to sponsor a family member to come to the USA on a green card. I understand this is a binding agreement with the US government, to demonstrate that the immigrant will not become a public charge (i.e., that the immigrant will not go on welfare/food stamps, and that if they do, I would be financially responsible).
For the sake of argument, let's say this family member does any of the following:
- Starts a bar fight here in the USA. The other party sues, demanding medical charges to be paid.
- Steals and breaks something, and is caught, with the owner demanding compensation.
- Drives my car without a license and gets in an at-fault car wreck, with major medical bills from the other driver.
Would I be legally and/or financially responsible as a sponsor under Form I-864 for any of these scenarios?
I know this is a stupid question. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
