What about communist party membership these days?

I am teaching English at a Chinese university. One of my students was a member of the communist party at the University. Many of the best students are recruited for membership. He is now working in the USA. He doesn’t consider himself as a member now. What will this mean for green card status or citizenship status? He is now on H1B Visa.
