Need advice regarding green card holder stay duration outside USA

Hi all,

Have a question. A green card holder's parent is sick, and they are unable to come to USA since they need to look after the parent. Are there any options available for them to extend their stay outside USA on such medical reasons, while maintaining valid gc status? Thank you!
