What are my options?

I am in a sea of information and honestly don’t know where to begin. I (35F UK Citizen) and my fiancĂ© (25M US Citizen) want to close the gap permanently. He is currently living with me in the UK and has a flight back to the US in September due to COVID.

He has a Bachelors degree in Biology and wants to work within the NHS or private research sector in the UK.

Currently you have to leave the country to apply for the fiancé visa for him to come over and for us to get married. Is this the best route? For him to stay until September. Go back to NYC and get a job to save for the process and then apply? Is there anyway we can do it with him here?

I fit the criteria for sponsorship - well over the minimum wage required, own my own home, can prove what we have is real, my employer will write the letter etc.

So is our plan of him going back and then us applying the best option?
