My wife, who is a foreign national, and I finally have the in-person interview for the marriage-based Greencard in December. We had good luck getting all our forms in accurately (no lawyer) and the only thing that we’ve been waiting on has been this interview which has taken 15 months since filing change of status in September 2019.
(TL:DR) My question is if it looks bad that we didn’t really have an engagement period.
We signed the marriage documents at the courthouse Sept 2019 and then I got her an engagement ring for Jan 1, 2020 (thankful for one positive thing this year). My wife was originally on a F1 OPT EAD and then got a second EAD card through our marriage and later a third renewal. We’ve been together since 2016 and have extensive history, own an apartment, have a shared bank account, our parents have met, etc but I’m worried on how we explain the reason for signing the marriage documents without any engagement (Covid obviously delayed the formal marriage ceremony with family). How do we say this so it’s like yes we got married for love (true) but we needed to get the ball rolling (without making it seem like we only got married for starting the Greencard process)? Or does that even matter and we just say that as it is?
