Working in the US

Hi everyone! I need help with a question about working in the US. I've already asked it on r/legaladvice but they told me it might get a better answer here. Hope it's fine.

I'm from Italy but I would like to find an internship in the US. I know that normally I'd need a sponsorship to work there (or at least I understood so) but now that working from home is a reality I have a question that doesn't seem to have an answer: do I still need a sponsorhip (or any other type of authorization) if I work from Italy for an American company?

I really hope someone can help me with this since it's a question often asked when submitting for roles.

Thanks to anyone who can help me!
