As a Canadian, will I need a visa to work remotely (intern) for a US-based company if I will be visiting a friend in the US?

TLDR: Can a Canadian citizen who works for USA company remotely from Canada visit USA as a tourist?

Facts:

- it is an internship role labelled as a "contract to hire"

- remote work

- based in San Francisco

- I'm Canadian resident

Context:

- I'm expected to work remotely wherever I am, but I'm planning to visit my friend in San Francisco during the duration of the internship. Therefore I will be travelling to the US, but not specifically *for the job. Essentially I'll be in the US, working remotely for a US based company, but my purpose of being there is not because of the job. Curious if I'll still need a J1 visa in this case?
