Hi all, this one is a little long but I will try to condense as much as possible. I'm crossposting this as I tried an HR sub but it seems that people do not understand the immigration classifications and how the process works.
My husband was hired at his current job as a permanent resident and filed a copy of his green card with his I-9 upon hire. He became a citizen back in May and took the oath, and surrendered his green card as per the rules. USCIS told him to wait at least 10 days and then call SSA to notify them to remove the restrictions from his SSN. He waited 14 days and then called the number for the local office and advised them accordingly. They told him his SSN was noted as a citizen and would be updated.
He notified his work of the change and they provided him with an I-9 to fill out. We were hesitant because USCIS clearly says that reverification for citizens is not necessary. He ignored the initial request and then got a follow up email demanding that he do it immediately or he would be suspended from payroll. We immediately filled it out and turned it in. A few days later, his HR reached back out and said his SSN is still restricted and he needs to turn in a copy of his green card. He doesn't have it anymore for obvious reasons.
We immediately called the SSA local office back and he was on hold for 2 hours, and then it hung up on him. We tried a different office further away and the same thing happened after 45 minutes on hold. We tried the national number and finally got on the phone with someone. They were very apologetic and said they would get a manager from the local office to call us within 5 business days. It's now been 9 business days and we've heard nothing. His HR is repeatedly threatening him with suspension. He's tried to call his HR and just gets an automated system where he can leave a message. He's left 3, none have been returned. Emails have not been returned. He has a meeting with his direct supervisor in a few minutes and he's going to see if she can get through to someone.
To be clear, his green card that is on file with HR was not set to expire until 2023 so regardless of his citizenship status, he has work authorization by the info they have until then.
Does anyone have advice? This entire situation is beyond ridiculous. He shouldn't even be required to do this and he is facing job loss.
