Hi all. I came to the USA on a K1 visa. I applied for, and received my SSN within the 90 day period. Flash forward to May, I receive my EAD card in the mail, a week later I am sent a Second SSN.
I called the SSA office, the employee was not helpful, told me that nobody should have two, that I should keep the second one and destroy the first one.
That’s all well and good, except I’ve already filed taxes with my husband, started working and also opened bank accounts, health insurance, applied for Real ID with the original SSN I received. The employee told me “it’s ok they’re both linked to each other on the system (?!), just change to the new one for all those documents, and destroy the first one”
I’ve seen on other forums that the advice given in this scenario varies depending on who in the office you’re speaking to. Some are told to mail back the second SSN. Some are told to pick one to use and destroy the second one.
Has anyone here gone through this? I tried calling my office but the wait times currently are insane.
Thanks!
