Leaving America with Expired Passport

Hi, not sure if this is the place for this post. I am a dual US/EU citizen. My American passport is expired, and would take months to renew due to covid.

I want to go to Central America for a few months to bunker down at a friend’s during this pandemic (not currently working anymore and would save money there), was planning to go on my EU passport, which is still valid.

As a US citizen, do I need my American passport to exit the USA? I know I’ll need it to come back, whenever that is. (Will just renew it at the embassy there) Thanks!
